Udaipur is one of Rajasthan‘s most romantic cities and Raffles tapped into this reputation with its flagship five-star property. This is the brand’s debut in India and it is one of the most prestigious hotels in the country. Raffles Udaipur stands on a private island in the middle of Udai Sagar, one of Udaipur’s five lakes, and its style reflects the grand, lavish heritage of the Mughal Empire. The hotel offers 101 lake-facing rooms with private pools and features an extensive spa, a swimming pool, and a rooftop restaurant—plus the Raffles classics: the Long Bar and Writers Bar.

“[…] Royalty meets fairy tale at the Taj Lake Palace Udaipur, seemingly poised to grace the waters of Lake Pichola. Here, every glance unveils breathtaking panoramas of the serene water expanse, rolling hills, and the splendid city of Udaipur.” — Taj Lake Palace Udaipur
The white walls and domes of the Taj Hotel rise from the mist in the middle of Lake Pichola as if they were part of a fleeting dream… but the Taj Lake Palace is very real. It is also a real palace, and it used to serve as a summer retreat for the Mewar Royal family. No other hotel in the area can claim to offer bedrooms that were once the chambers of the rulers of Udaipur. It’s a unique opportunity to stay at an authentic palace, seemingly afloat in the middle of Lake Pichola. It offers the best spot in Udaipur with a fabulous view of the City Palace, the current residence of the Maharaja (which the guests of Taj Lake Palace Udaipur can visit for free).
Make sure to check before booking for the seasons, as the water can completely disappear from the lake in the dryest periods. Read the review from our stay for more tips: Taj Lake Palace.

Few hotels showcase the rich heritage of the Mewar region in a quite so spectacular way like Oberoi Udaivilas. The hotel’s architecture harks back to the Rajasthan’s heritage. Its style is grand and sweeping, befitting the Mogul Maharaja, but it offers a modern take on the local vernacular. The Oberoi Udaivilas never feels old-fashioned. Located on the banks of Lake Pichola, Oberoi offers a classy, relaxing base from which to explore Udaipur sights. Make sure to experience the candle-lit private dinner under the lakeside dome, for an unforgettable time.
Book one of the lake view suites with access to a semi-private swimming pool. For more tips, check out the review from our stay: The Oberoi Udaivilas.

RAAS Devigarh occupies an 18th-century palace converted to an all-suite luxury resort that propels the traditional Mawar aesthetics to the 21st Century. While the hotel pays homage to the classic décor, more than anything it contrasts the traditional majesty of its exterior with the swanky luxury inside. RAAS Devigarh is a modern palace, with all the extravagances of a top luxury hotel. There’s an Ayurvedic spa, offering everything from massages and beauty treatments to yoga, a fully-equipped gym, and a heated swimming pool, and the restaurant blends Indian traditions with European cuisines and an extensive wine cellar.

Standing on the edge of Lake Pichhola, Taj Fateh Prakash Palace is part of the City Palace complex and its careful restoration preserved the authentic historicity of the property. The hotel has an atmosphere of a lived-in museum. Its sixty-five rooms and suites feature curated vintage decor, with furniture straight off royal storerooms, and fabrics and paintings to match. The most spectacular space at the hotel is the Durbar Hall, with a dramatic central crystal chandelier weighing a ton (literally). The hotel offers panoramic views of the lake, especially from the Sunset Terrace restaurant; other attractions include curated royal experiences, such as a ceremonial English Afternoon Tea in the Surya Darshan Bar, or a chauffeured vintage car transfer. After Taj Lake Palace, Taj Fateh is the second hotel in Udaipur occupying a former palace.

“The Leela Palace Udaipur offers a spectacular view of the tranquil waters of the Lake Pichola, the City Palace and the Aravalli mountains, evoking the grandeur and opulence of the land of Mewars” — The Leela Palace
This palace hotel channels the majesty and splendor of the royal era of Mewar. The hotel’s facade gleams like a gem, studded with dome-shaped pavilions (chattris) and jharokhas, the stone-carved windows projecting from the building. Guests get a royal welcome that includes rose-petal showers, and they can enjoy breakfasts by the lake, picnics in the guava orchard, and swims in the temperature-controlled pool. There are only 80 rooms and suites, and all are lavishly appointed. The hotel has extensive luxury facilities including wedding venues, and a menu of experiences and curated adventures, spiritual ceremonies, and cultural events. Don’t miss the visit to the Chittor Fort, the 7th-century UNESCO World Heritage site.

The Taj Aravali Resort & Spa stands in stark contrast to the typical offering in Udaipur. Rather than channeling traditional design or calling to the old kingdoms, Aravali’s sharp lines, high-tech, and trendy design are more modern than other Taj hotels, offering the latest from the world of luxury. The hotel is also not located on the shore of the lake, or on an island in the middle of it, but it sits on a forested hillside of the Aravali Range. The hotel sits on some 27 acres of land, and it has 92 guest rooms and suites, cottages, but also luxury tents. All done up with taste and furnished for maximum comfort. Guests benefit from Jiva spa, and a good few restaurants, including Javitri, the vegetarian signature restaurant, and the grill house Ridgeview. While the hotel is remote enough to be an easy base camp for mountain hiking, Udaipur is still only minutes away.
