For Hoxton, the “affordable luxury” brand from London, the Amsterdam hotel is the first overseas venture. Spread over five townhouses on Amsterdam’s Herengracht canal, the Hoxton Amsterdam wows with an industrial, masculine style. The unfussy design features dark wood floors, velvet curtains, leather chairs, and splashes of Vermeerian yellow and blue. The evident sensitivity to heritage shows up in vintage lighting and furniture, especially in the guest rooms — of which there are 111. The hotel has a restaurant, a bar, and event facilities, centered around the large glass-topped courtyard.

The Noblemen’s experience is inspired by the lives of figures from Amsterdam’s illustrious past. The hotel occupies a canal house dating back to 1663, once owned by a marble merchant. It has only thirteen rooms themed to call out historical persons, such as the zoologist Albertus Seba. “His” room features a cabinet of curiosities and lights made out of conch shells. This is a boutique hotel that feels equally grand and homely. The reception is housed in the building’s original kitchen, and there is plenty of antique furniture in the rooms. Some feature copper baths. Breakfast can be served in the four-poster beds — the showpiece of each room. Hotel The Noblemen is a place where stylish luxury meets history.

Epitome of Luxury in The City That Never Sleeps
The Dylan was one of the world’s first boutique hotels. Today it continues to stand as a benchmark for style and service and is one of the smartest addresses in town. The hotel occupies a 17th-century townhouse in the heart of Amsterdam, on one of the city’s most picturesque canals. Its rich history started when the building housed a theatre before passing through stages as a poorhouse and a bakery. Today, the refined service matches the ultra-luxe interiors with an unconventional ambiance. The design utilizes lacquered colonial furniture, mahogany floors, and silk fabrics to form a sophisticated blend of oriental style and contemporary décor. The hotel has 41 rooms and suites featuring a four-poster bed and well-equipped bathrooms. The hotel’s Vinkeles restaurant is well-known for its excellent Private Dining.

“A lakeside boutique hotel frayed by tall grasses, laundered linen whispering in the wind and a row of gabled, clapboard houses in misty hues skirting along the water’s edge.”
— De Durgerdam
Just a short drive or scenic boat ride from Amsterdam, De Durgerdam has opened after a five-year restoration led by the Dutch hospitality group Aedes. Located in the charming former fishing village of Durgerdam, this 14-room lakefront boutique hotel partly occupies a carefully restored 17th-century inn, once popular among sailors and merchants during the Dutch Golden Age.
Local design studio Buro Belén drew inspiration from the village’s maritime history, incorporating unique touches like a chandelier inspired by fishing nets and shredded rope wall-hangings in De Mark, the lobby restaurant and bar. Rooms in the historic section feature exposed wooden beams, cozy window seats, velvet throws, and custom tiles crafted by the Netherlands’ oldest ceramics company. Guests can relax by the fireplace in the cozy library, borrow bikes to explore, or swim from the hotel’s private dock.

Sir Adam Hotel stands under the same roof as the headquarters of several music-and-entertainment companies, including guitar manufacturer Gibson. In many ways, this defines the hotel’s look and feel. The interiors’ industrial themes are mixed with colorful rock’n’roll details and artwork. Gibson guitars adorn the walls. The hotel features 110 rooms, a restaurant, and a terrace, designed by interior designers from ICRAVE studio. Floor-to-ceiling windows offer wonderful views over the IJ river. It’s the second property from Sir Hotels to be opened in Amsterdam.

Not many hotels can boast uninterrupted service for over 150 years. The stately Amstel Amsterdam is in that exclusive club, alongside the world-famous classic grand hotels such as Singapore’s Raffles. In Amsterdam, it’s an icon famed for flawless service and favored by royalty and celebrities. As the name suggests, the hotel stands on the bank of the Amstel river (though out of the main canal belt), and the best rooms offer views across the river to the old part of the city. The dynamic brand of W Hotels offers a refreshingly bold take on a hotel experience — and now it is making its mark in Amsterdam. True to the group’s spirit, W Amsterdam offers an atypical experience that includes check-in on the rooftop Lounge — for there is no cookie-cutter hotel lobby here — while the guest accommodation bears such names as WOW suite or Extreme Wow Suite. Wet Deck, Amsterdam’s first rooftop swimming pool, has water heated in winter. There are 238 rooms, of which couple dozen are suites. The hotel stands close to the Royal Palace and Dam Square.

The Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam calls upon its rich heritage — and the building’s changing purpose over the centuries. The 1578 property once housed a convent, the Admiralty, and a lodge for royal visitors. Today, it is a place of elegance and serenity. The high ceilings and white marble floors inspire a sense of grandeur, yet the monumental interiors are softened through a warm color palette and witty design ideas. The interiors juxtapose modern art with centuries-old architecture. They are contemporary yet classic — and charmingly Dutch. Ultimately, Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam is one of the city’s original Grand Dame Hotels. It has 177 guest rooms (including 52 luxury suites with butler service), an excellent Michelin-starred restaurant (the sumptuous breakfasts are legendary), and an indulgent spa.

In a city with an as long and eventful history as Amsterdam’s, a property that can boast “only” one hundred years of heritage seems quite young. But that is long enough for a hotel to welcome guests in one way or another — and such is Hotel Arena. It offers a contemporary stay on the doorstep of the popular Oosterpark with city-living facilities such as bike rental and in-house laundry service — and PARK, the hotel’s modern bistro. The restaurant is filled with natural light and offers a menu of Dutch classics and carefully curated cocktails.

A modernized 1930s building with Art Nouveau credentials is home to the Soho House Amsterdam. The six-floor limestone-and-granite establishment houses a 79-room hotel with a stunning rooftop, an in-house cinema, and Cowshed Spa. The hotel spaces hold some remarkable features, from the intimidating-looking gym to a spectacular central stairway, which has a church-like quality. The rooms range from Tiny to XL Monumental, and their design draws colors from the waterways of Amsterdam: seaweed-green and blue. Guests enjoy a range of Cowshed shower gels, shampoos, and oils.

Luxury in the cradle of the Renaissance
Andaz Amsterdam Prinsengracht is a high-end boutique hotel celebrating Amsterdam living with a creative take on the otherwise restrained Dutch design. The hotel is infused with the extravagant style of the Dutch designer Marcel Wanders through quirky aesthetics and creative ideas — such as moonlike orbs hanging from the glass-roofed lobby atrium or giant murals of gasping herrings. The hotel is located amid the city’s canal belt, a short walk from the Nine Streets district. This 122-room hotel has 24/7 room service, a dedicated concierge team, and even an on-request limousine service.

Sir Albert Hotel comes with a lot of personality and flair. Its style has charming eccentricity and a mischievous streak. But the interiors are also deeply elegant — with contemporary Dutch furniture, Persian rugs, and quirky artworks assembled to deliver a stylistic treat. And yet, the staff makes sure to put its guests at ease from the first moment. Guests check in on a soft leather sofa by the fireplace with a welcome cocktail. The building used to house a diamond factory, and among the inherited features are the enormous windows, for polishing diamonds required a lot of natural light. The neighborhood has the city’s highest concentration of good restaurants — and one more is Izakaya, the hotel’s award-winning establishment, serving small Japanese plates and cocktails in its bar.

The Hoxton is expanding in Amsterdam with the second hotel in the city, with the address in the Eastern Docklands district, only a 10-minute cycle from Centraal Station. The Hoxton occupies a landmark 1921 building whose layered history has influenced the hotel’s design. Responsible for the hotel design is Ennismore Design Studio, in collaboration with Nicemakers, a local design studio. The designers embraced and elevated the building’s original architectural details, such as stained-glass windows or wooden floors, while ceramic tiles call out to the early 20th Century German Brick Expressionism. The hotel features 136 bedrooms in several categories, including tongue-in-cheek rooms with bunk beds. There is also a restaurant, an outdoor terrace, and a meeting/events space called The Apartment.

Canal House combines historical canal-house charm and the very latest, modern Dutch design. Its style blends timeless elegance and modern luxury in its cozy, tightly-interconnected spaces, designed with contrasts between luxuriant materials and austere forms. This translates to interiors finished with exquisite materials in a deeply-satisfying palette of rich purple, pure copper, and intense black. Located in Jordaan, the cultural center of Amsterdam, the hotel comprises three seventeenth-century merchant houses. It features only 23 rooms, but the highlight is the common spaces — including the Great Room lounge, the stylish bar, and a stunning private garden.

De Witt Amsterdam is the first Kimpton hotel to open in Europe. Its address is convenient, a short walk from Centraal Station, and its location is defined by a smart conversion of two 17th-century houses. The building’s green facade hints at an innovative approach to hotel design in a single neon reading “and breath” on an otherwise spartan exterior. The interiors are calm, stylish, and contemporary — and service is brightly efficient, with thoughtful attention to detail. The hotel features a restaurant priding itself on a hearty, imaginative fusion of Dutch and American cuisine.

The heritage building on Dam Square housing Anantara Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky has a long and illustrious history. In 1866, a Polish tailor A.W. Krasnapolsky opened a coffee house here, later expanding it into a hotel. The 155 years of history that ensued shape the hotel’s experience today. Dining is the highlight, with The White Room led by a three-star Michelin chef, the tradition-infused Grand Café Krasnapolsky, and the award-winning cocktail bar The Tailor — serving, quite literally, “tailored” cocktails. Then there is the Wintergarden, a 19th-century, glass-covered conservatory, where breakfast is served. Anantara Spa is bound to be a standout facility, with three specialized treatment rooms, a sauna, and a hammam. Krasnapolsky has 402 rooms designed in a contemporary style.

Among Amsterdam’s more surprising hotel concepts is the Japanese-owned Hotel Okura — the five-star luxury here comes with an Asian twist. Guests can expect outstanding service, Michelin-starred cuisine, and a tranquil spa that features the biggest swimming pool among all hotels in the city. It’s also one of the city’s tallest hotels; it occupies a 23-story building situated on the outskirts of the De Pijp district. This is a relatively large hotel, but it is defined by quiet luxury through subdued decor, courteous service, and calming atmosphere. The building towers over the low-rise city in the centrally located “Latin” neighborhood. Guests wake up to panoramic city views. The rooms are spacious and comfortable.
