“Staying at the Sofitel Legend Metropole? Wake up early, grab a quick breakfast at the French-style Le Beaulieu, and discover Hanoi in style, riding in a vintage Citroen.”
— From our write-up: Experience Hanoi City by vintage car with Sofitel Legend
Opened in 1901, Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi whispers tales of its storied past, especially in the Heritage Wing. Its traditional lobby, lined with dark wood, has bamboo furniture and oval staircases hinting at Art Nouveau style. The hotel facade, with its green shutters, interior paneling and period furniture, and even the lush courtyard lawn—all are reminiscent of the colonial era.
The hotel also celebrates its links to the past with its beautiful vintage Citroen limousines from the 1950s—which can be rented with a chauffeur. It’s a great way to explore Hanoi’s old quarter.
Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi evokes the atmosphere of The Quiet American, the novel Graham Greene finished here—but the list of famous former guests does not end here. Jane Fonda lived here during the anti-war movement in the sixties; Charlie Chaplin stayed in Metropole during his honeymoon (and his room today bears his name). Although we spotted no celebrities, Sofitel Legend Metropole is still the best address in Hanoi today.
The hotel also has the more contemporary Opera Wing, with a more “recent” style; while the accommodations here are spacious and comfortable, we still chose the Heritage side. Our room oozed the charm of the old—with wooden floors, cane furniture, classic fixtures, and shutters—but it was beautifully appointed with modern amenities that seamlessly blended with classic decor.
“Graham Greene used to hang out with fellow writers at the Metropole’s Le Club Bar, where his favorite drink was dry Vermouth.”— From our write-up: Experience Hanoi City by vintage car
Dining at Sofitel Legend Metropole is a delight. The breakfast at Spice Garden was a highlight, with a decadent buffet setting the day’s tone. We especially loved the famous “chocolate buffet,” served with afternoon tea. Here, guests can indulge in all kinds of chocolate in dozens of ways. Dinner at Le Beaulieu was the perfect finish to the day—we recommend seafood dishes.
The hotel focuses on relaxation and rejuvenation—often with a dash of history. Among the amenities is a stunning outdoor swimming pool set within lush gardens and a spa and fitness center with various services designed to pamper. One of the unique offerings is the Path of History tour, which provides insights into the hotel’s fascinating past. The tour includes visiting its air raid shelter.
“Hanoi’s Old Quarter—a must-visit neighborhood— is famous for labyrinthine streets and landmark sites. Among them is the Temple of Literature (Hanoi’s first university), and the 1400-year-old Tran Quoc Pagoda.”
— From our review of Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi
Our favorite spot was La Terrasse, where we would spend time over a drink or tea, watching the world go by. La Terrasse is a pleasant visit, even if you only pass by. The hotel’s location—near the iconic Opera House and bustling Old Quarter—makes it a lovely stop for those looking to immerse themselves in Hanoi’s vibrant culture.
But staying at the hotel is an ideal base for exploration. Everything from local shops to historic sites is just a short walk away. We spent many afternoons wandering the old quarter of Hanoi—but if you prefer to plan a more organized itinerary, see Viator or GetYourGuide, where you can find tours and activities tailored to your interests (TripAdvisor can also provide ideas and inspiration).
This luxury hotel is a historical landmark that reflects Vietnam’s colonial past. It is also an oasis of peace, standing in contrast to the hustle and bustle of the busy Hanoi streets. We had a lovely time here, and you can, too—book your stay at Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi now and experience the old city in style.
