Housed in a five-story palazzo-style building that dates back to the 17th century, the petite, ten suite G-Rough hotel showcases a “Made in Italy” concept of luxury in Rome’s Piazza Navona.

G-Rough hotel mixes high- and low-brow luxury, celebrating Italian design in a unique ‘rough luxe’ aesthetic. It’s the brainchild of friends, business partners, and bon vivants Gabriele Salini and Emanuele Garosci—the pair behind Venice’s sophisticated PalazzinaG.

Thanks to a shared vision of redefining luxury and an unconventional approach to hospitality, the founders created an atmosphere of contemporary nostalgia, unique to G-Rough.

Retro glamour

Each floor of this ten suite property is inspired by a renowned Italian designer from the early 20th Century: Giò Ponti, Ico Parisi, Silvio Cavatorta, Paolo Venini, Guglielmo Ulrich, Osvaldo Borsani, Archimede Seguso. Each suite features original furniture, and the ninety-square-meter penthouse boasts a stunning view of the Sant’Agnese dome.

The interiors make an impression of a Fellini-esque visual landscape that blends fantasy and baroque. This is augmented by a luxury tailor-made travel experience, which includes services of a “lifestyle manager” and an exclusive tour of the hidden side of Rome.

The hotel also features a small café and bar on the ground floor, which showcases work from local up-and-coming designers and artists.

What we love

• The creative brief of the ‘rough luxe’ aesthetic included preservation of many of the building’s imperfections. The 16th-century tile floors are worn out, the frescoes are deliberately unrestored. The sanded walls and timber beams all add up to a cohesive vision, and a very stylish look
• The pared-back but luxurious furnishings, with iconic Italian pieces from the 1930s to ’60s: spider-limbed Sputnik chandeliers by Gino Sarfatti, parchment beds by Guglielmo Ulrich or bar trolley by Giò Ponti
• Some suites offer great views to the Sant’Agnese dome in Piazza Navona (especially the Penthouse), others face Piazza di Pasquino or overlook Rome’s picturesque courtyards and rooftops
• The staff can arrange out-of-the-ordinary attractions—from private dinners in a palazzo featured in the Oscar-winning film The Great Beauty, to design tutorials with an instructor at Rome’s Academy of Costume and Fashion
