Alila Ubud is steeped in the Balinese spirit — the hillside buildings of this hotel resemble a local village layout, the distinctly humanist design style draws from the Balinese architectural traditions, and the otherworldly infinity pool appears to float above the valley, revealing the mystical ingredient of the Bali experience.

Located high above the Ayung River, on the outskirts of Bali’s cultural heartland, this secluded and tranquil hillside retreat owes its understated design to the world-renowned studio Kerry Hill Architects.

Rooms and villas

The designers seamlessly fused the natural with contemporary elements. Straw roofs brush against the smooth plaster walls, terracotta tiles merge with gravel and crushed rock, and wood meets the glass.

The 56 rooms of the resort are housed in 14 blocks, arranged to ensure panoramic views of the magical Ayung valley. The lower floor rooms feature individual garden terraces and have a back courtyard with an open-air bathroom and shower. The upper floor rooms enclose a private balcony and have the best views.

The twelve freestanding villas offer privacy and tranquility in the Pool Villas, which are nestled within a private garden with pool. the Valley Villas benefit from delightful views over the lush green Ayung River valley. The Terrace Tree Villas, hidden above the breezy jungle canopy, offer a lot of private space (120 sqm).

Body and spirit

Thanks to the towering coconut pillars and tall thatched roof, the brasserie-style Plantation restaurant feels bright and open. Its kitchen specializes in artfully prepared, healthy Balinese cuisine.

This healthy theme is carried on in the Spa Alila, where unique treatments blend ancient Asian healing practices with beauty recipes that feature freshly prepared ingredients.

Alila Ubud hints at Bali’s spiritual dimension with the most dramatic element of the resort, it’s world-famous, instantly recognizable 25-meter infinity pool. Its surface reflects the ever-changing Ubud sky, its smooth edge looks out to the green valley, often cloaked in mist.

Alila Ubud is well-known thanks to the dramatic infinity pool, renowned for amazing views, and praised for comfort and care provided by well-trained staff. And rightfully so — it's one of the top resorts in the region.

What we love

• Great views from all rooms and villas, as well as from the jaw-dropping infinity pool

What you should know

• The hotel is well placed for discovering the island's cultural heritage. It is located on the outskirts of Ubud, just far enough for the tranquil experience but still within easy reach to the town (it’s about 15 minutes drive)
• The free shuttle bus into town stops at 5.30 PM. You’ll need a taxi after that
• The hotel’s pool area has limited space for lounging
• There are stairs everywhere, so the less able guests may find the place difficult to navigate
